Nottingham - Aspley Hall
Aspley Hall in Nottingham, now demolished, is first mentioned in an inventory of rental returns dated 1554. It belonged to Lenton Priory and is believed to have been a hunting lodge for the Prior. After the dissolution of the monasteries under Henry VIII, it passed to the Willoughby family at Wollaton Hall, Nottingham, headed by Sir Percival Willoughby, originally from the Eresby branch of the family from Lincolnshire. In 1786 it was sold within the family to the 5th Lord Middleton at Wollaton and remained in that family's ownership until 1925 when it was sold to Alderman G.E. Taylor for £18,750. He died in 1965 and the house was demolished in 1968. It is now the site of Kirtle Close. This picture was used in the 1925 Wollaton estate sale catalogue.

Turn of the Century
The ghostly modernity of a brand new cemetery feels more uneasy to me than a derelict one. I'm so used to intrusions of nature, that the current approach of planting graves in an open field seems strange to me. But under cover of storm clouds coming, I feel a little bit of the lightning rod in me. Shimmering loss of life so recent, history always making itself. Spring turned over suddenly in my homeland. This time last week, there wasn't a speck of green in those tall tree branches, nothing but naked twigs swaying. Now it's all coming alive, with mosquitoes too and blackflies buzzing – a bit of bad with the good that's coming. Wandering warm again for the first time in months, finally feeling the chill shiver loose. I never knew the ones buried here when they were living, all elderly folks lost since the turn of the century. One day, I'll return to find this field filled end to end with granite blocks. For now, it's got all the life of dying just starting,
